Mercedes-Benz Recommended Maintenance Schedule

Mercedes-Benz currently uses their Flexible Service System (FSS) in an attempt to help determine the appropriate mileage/time intervals for vehicle servicing. The FSS system was introduced in the US in 1998 and it uses a system of letters that correspond to a combination of services at mileage and time milestones. We have heard from many clients that the letter-based FSS system is confusing and ambiguous, with most clients stating that they often don’t even know what is being done on their vehicle from a service standpoint. We have done our best to simplify the maintenance schedule to make it less confusing. The FSS letters, i.e. “Service A”, “Service B”, etc will change over time and may be displayed as “Service A7” or “Service B5”. This indicates a “Service A” plus additional service items based on the vehicle’s total accumulated mileage and age. This is where it can get confusing for owners.

Mercedes “Service A” is recommended every 10,000 miles or every year. This service always includes an engine oil service and a “Service A” inspection which includes a thorough visual inspection, battery test, fault memory survey, and a road-test. Depending upon the age/mileage of your Mercedes, this service may also include other routine services such as engine air filter replacement, cabin air filter replacement, brake fluid flush service, etc.

Mercedes “Service B” is recommended every 20,000 miles or every 2 years. This service always includes an engine oil service and a “Service B” inspection that has a thorough visual inspection, cleaning sunroof/body drains, battery test, fault memory survey, and a road-test component. The “Service B” also corresponds with the Brake Fluid Flush and Cabin Air Filter Replacement intervals. There may be other services needed based on vehicle age/mileage such as front/rear differential fluid service, transmission fluid service, spark plug replacement, etc. Things really get confusing from there as this is where the “Service A7” or “Service D” and so on start to be displayed.

To help simplify the maintenance schedule and remove any ambiguity, we have developed our own maintenance plan for Mercedes-Benz vehicles. Our maintenance plan coincides with the Mercedes FSS service in some areas and includes some service and interval changes that in our experience will help keep your Mercedes in better condition for longer and reduce your long-term overall ownership costs.

    • After any incidents on the road-way resulting in tire/wheel damage
  • Coolant Replacement (based on pH and freeze protection test results)
  • Accessory Drive Belt Replacement (based on inspection findings)
  • Coolant Hose Replacement (based on inspection findings)

Important Notes

  1. Oil Service Interval: This schedule is based on a 5,000-mile oil change interval for optimal engine protection and longevity.
  2. Air Filters: The 15,000-mile interval accounts for high particulate matter and pollen counts. Monitor seasonal conditions and replace earlier if necessary.
  3. 4Matic Models: Transfer case fluid service applies only to all-wheel-drive equipped vehicles.
  4. Inspections vs. Replacements: Regular inspections help catch wear items before they fail. Replace components as needed based on inspection findings.

This maintenance schedule is designed to meet or exceed manufacturer recommendations and provide maximum reliability and longevity for your Mercedes-Benz vehicle.
